You can connect both HDMI & Optical Cable, but because the HDMI takes over precedent since you be connecting it to the RCA TV, besides you will get a better sound, like DTS Dolby Digital, and if you're TV that has Dolby Digital +, or Atmos Sound like mine does, it will be irrelevant to use the Optical cable, even my Direct TV smart box has Dolby Atmos Detection HDMI Cable. Even thou this Soundbar doesn't have Atmos Sound, the sound is incredible and clear and bass are superb quality. Bottom line I don't think you need to use the optical cable, in fact, you can use a second HDMI thru the soundbar to get a higher experience sound when you connect your Game Console thru the second HDMI input in the back of the sound bar and you will forget the optical even exist.
