It flips up, and I am short, I don't hit my head on the sink, but I have to stand on tiptoes to reach the bottom.

I'm 5'8" and I can reach items at the bottom. May have to stretch to get the last sock. For shorter people, I would recommend buying a $15 trash pick-up tool at Home Depot to pick up the items that can't be reached. Or get a shorter washing machine. I need the biggest size I can afford so i would personally find a way to make it work. :-)
