I had no problem setting up mine. Make sure all devices that you connect to the HDMI slots are powered off. Disconnect the cables wait a minute and reattach them. Turn on all connected devices including Apple TV. Turn TV on and run setup again. The TV should now recognize all the devices automatically.

My Apple TV worked fine and it's not a new model either, probably 3-4 years old. Have you swapped out HDMI cables to see if that's the issue?
