Could be one of a couple things. First, check your DVD player's settings to see if the screen shape is set to 16:9 aspect ratio/widescreen. If it's not, change it to 16:9/widescreen and see if that helps. If it already is set to 16:9/widescreen, it's possible the movie you're watching is wider than 16:9 (could be 2:35:1) so the black bars are normal so the edges of the movie are not cut off. Research anamorphic DVD for more info. Also, there are some really old old DVDs that were made for old 4:3 tube TVs that had extra thick black bars added to the movie when they were made. Not much you can do about this except that there might be a picture size/stretch setting on your TV that you can use to make adjustments to the shape of the picture but I would only use this feature on an as-needed basis and not leave it on all the time as it can distort HD content and newer DVDs. Hope this helps you.
