The main difference I can explain is the more pixels you have the clearer the picture. If you stream a lot of tv through netflix or other online service you would be wise to go ahead and get a 4k tv over 1080p. The biggest difference I can see is in how good the colors look. I have a $1700 and a $500 4k, and both look better than my $2000 1080p tv
