Hello oldlady, this unit will only need internet if you are wanting to access the smart applications. ^Britt
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I know the question has been answered, and I agree that you do not HAVE to have internet. BUT I wanted to reiterate the benefit of it. I bought this tv a little over a month ago. A few days before Christmas we had a freak bolt of lightning hit the house next door. It was close enough to our house that it fried the HDMI ports on my brand new TV. I called Samsung and because I had my tv connected to the internet, Samsung support was able to connect to my TV with my permission and run a diagnostic test to determine what was wrong. The Samsung warranty covered the damage and they sent someone out to change out the mother board at no charge. Connecting to the internet through the TV is a big benefit. If possible I would encourage it. Beyond that, this TV is great.

The internet connection is only required to use the built-in apps, netflix, amazon prime, hulu etc. I would highly recommend connecting this to the internet though, as the you will have access to many 4k HDR movies and shows through these services.
