“I’ve tried two different HDMI splitters and neither will work. The tv doesn’t recognize it’s attached. Has anyone had luck with a certain splitter? Or is there something specific I should be doing to get it to work?”

There are 6 versions of HDMI and those splitters might not support the newer versions that are for 4K and up resolutions and their switching/data scenarios. Current versions on the new sets can be V1.4 or V2.0
