Forgive me if you are a more experienced user and this suggestion is "too basic." Have you checked to see what speakers are selected? I have a sound bar attached to my television. There are times when I have switched to the television speakers and can still hear the sound bar so I have to go back and mute it or turn it all the way down. Could you possibly be trying to control the wrong speakers?
