First, make sure all the surface burner knobs are in the OFF position. To remove a knob, hold one at top and bottom (I use thumb and forefinger) and pull the knob toward you off the control valve stems, using a slight up and down wiggling motion if needed to remove them. If you are going to take more than one knob off at a time, take special care to remember which goes where since not all controls/knobs are the same. If you are anxious about this, maybe only clean one at a time. Clean knobs in warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. When putting a knob back on, be sure to line it up exactly as it was when you took it off (vertical, with marker up so the replaced knob indicates the OFF position)
