Yes it can be laid down both for transporting and for installing the base...I did both.

I layed the TV face down on my couch (Its an L shaped couch so I put it in the corner) and then installed the base. Did it by myself but I would recommend another person. Just make sure you don't put pressure on the screen.

You'll have to lay it screen down on a support to install the base because it goes both behind and in front of the TV for balance when you stand it up. It was very easy. Make sure the frame around the screen is supported so the weight isn't resting on the screen. You can use your dinning table and let the edge of the TV rest at the edge of the table so the base can go past the tv. It's only a few screws fastening it on. Very simple. Takes only a few minutes.
