In my case I believe it was an open box item because the previous owner didn't adjust the picture settings enough to eliminate the jagged edges that appeared on fast-moving objects. I would have returned the TV myself if not for the fact that I had seen this problem many times before on my other TVs and knew that you had to disable some of the "advanced" features (like sharpness enhancement) in order to correct this problem.

If it's refurbished, I don't think you'd ever find that out, as the product got returned, it would be sent back to the manufacture to get inspection if there's nothing wrong, and it would get repaired if there's something wrong of course.
