When you set up the TV, it will ask you what the input is. So it could be Cable/Sat, Game/Blu Ray, etc. But you do have the choice to tell it. The TV will then adapt to what you labeled it for best picture and sound. The selection is optional. You can adjust after the system has made recommendations. Movies are fantastic. Have not tried the upconverter with a blu ray to 4K
