There are a couple of factors here. The screen itself isnt totally inky black but i think its hard to notice even if the tv is off. That is generally considered negligible and has been on top samsung and sony tvs for at least a couple years like the A95L, A95K, S95C, S95B and probably at least the american versions of the S90D and S90C The s95d specifically (and upcoming s95f) also has the anti-glare coating which has been a bit controversial and hasnt been considered as negligible. I'd recommend seeing it in store first to get your opinion of it. I think of it like this: while its an improvement at handling direct reflections, it does it by smearing the reflection's light all around the screen and in all other directions to make the screen more evenly washed out by the reflection to make the picture more completely visible at the cost of some quality for you and everyone else in the room at the time of the reflection. Is that noticable? How much ambient light makes it noticable? Does it do more harm than good? Its hard to quantify.

If you find the default image darker than you'd like, you may want to adjust Picture Settings such as brightness, contrast, peak brightness, and more. You can also enable Intelligent Mode which recognizes and analyzes the surroundings, noise, the content, and your usage patterns to provide the best viewing experience. ~ Samsung Specialist
