“How is this unit (EP-PN920) different than the more expensive Samsung charge pad (EP-3100)? Do both units have fan cooling? Any there other differences? Thanks!”

I am not familiar with the more expensive EP-3100 so I don't know how it differs from the PN920. However, I have several of the PN920 wireless chargers around my house and can tell you that I am very happy with all of them. The PN920 supports fast charging, has no problem charging my Note 9 in its Otterbox phone case, and for some reason is half the price of the EP-3100. Save your money and buy the PN920.
