Sorry to tell you that your friend is wrong. NFC is for data transfer and not for wireless charging. In order to be able to charge your S5 wirelessly, you will have to buy a wireless charger transmitter that you will have to connect to your phones mini usb plus and wrap the sensor behind your phone.

If the phone has a glass backing on it, then it should. Otherwise, NFC is more for things like Bluetooth audio, airdrop (the Samsung equivalent), etc.
