No; you only need to have a phone that supports wireless charging. In this particular case, I believe you must have at least a Samsung Galaxy S6 or newer phone.

No. We have the S7. We just plugged the adapter to the outlet, and laid the phone, centered, onto the disc. Charging time is the same as the traditional way. This is just another avenue to charging.
