• The speakers will play whatever sound is transmitted through them. To upscale your sound (&video) you need an upscaling player. Regarding your speakers age isn't the determining factor, speaker tech hasn't changed much, but the quality of the speakers you have. For instance Bose speakers will always sound better than less expensive brands. Set up plays a good part too. If you want to upgrade to 7.1 you merely need to buy the other two speakers and integrate them.
