You have to have the water hooked up and then you will get the pitcher to auto fill and get your ice maker to work. If you walk in front of the window, you can watch the water going into the pitcher if it's not already full. If the pitcher is empty and you stand in front of the window too long, it will stop filling until you step away. That is to make sure you don't open the door and try to remove the pitcher. I'm sure that is a safety feature.
