The pitcher has a small cylindrical chamber with holes in it, into which you can place slices of cucumber/lemon/whatever. It stays in the pitcher and doesn't get anywhere else. It's good to only use it for a day or two before cleaning out the pitcher--it gets funky pretty quickly, but it's delightful!
