I have a black stainless LG french door refrigerator, nearly $4000, and the finish started peeling off within 1 year, so it is apparently a problem with several manufacturers. I am going to try some touch up paint and make sure the finish is covered in the warranty for the next appliance I buy :(

This is exactly what has happened to my samsung stove in the exact same place as yours! I bought it from P.C.richard and Sons. I just hung up from them saying the same things - it i s"cosmetic". Samsung is sending someone out to take a look at least. I will be very angry if they don't replace the door though as I bought not only the stove, but also a Samsung refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave less than a year ago!

Black stainless is just a plastic coating on regular stainless steel. Paper towels will scratch it and you can't use any cleaners on it. This is a huge problem with black stainless appliances.

I purchased a black stainless Kenmore Elite 3 months ago and the paint is flaking. They will not do anything because they say it is cosmetic. Well I purchased it because of the cosmetic appeal. I will never again purchase a Kenmore product.

I have the same problem on my LG refrigerator. I called them and they will pay for parts and labor to fix. They gave me no problem. Service is coming on Monday. I suggest anyone who called and didn't get help call again. Maybe they gave had so many complaints that they have changed the way they handle complaints

I was a QA inspector in my previous career. I believe it is happening with all appliances manufacturer's. True stainless does not peel, nor did original epoxy paint (white) for the first 100yr. of American made appliances. It's clear that what they are using now and calling it stainless is actually a faux stainless product that is made from plastic applied via a poor quality process ie; electro static that simply does not fix the finish to the material. Can't prove it if course, but I'm betting money any quality inspector or NDE certified inspector who works for LG, Samsung etc. could confirm exactly what the problem is.

I have been experimenting with different nail polishes. Some of the chrome effects type seem to be the closest match (at least it helps make it less noticeable from afar).Our fridge, range dishwasher and microwave are all black stainless and all have paint flaking off at any of the handle joints where it appears the metal panels flex. Class action may be the only recourse. A technician told me it is the paint not the brand. All black stainless has been doing this.

the same thing happened to my LG appliances. Stove and French door refridgerator. LG said it is not covered??? It is definitely a defect. To add to that the refrigerator stopped cooling and then the freezer stopped working. That was covered under the warrenteebut it took a good month to get it fixed. It is a good thing we had a 20 year old refrigerator in the garage. NEVER BUYING LG APPLIANCES AGAIN. all are high end appliances too. Very dissapointed

I don’t have a good answer, sadly, just a similar experience. I bought all new appliances from Sears (LG manufactured Kenmore), and the black stainless steel door on my refrigerator has started peeling. I haven’t used harsh cleansers, etc. Just started to peel. I am going to try to seal it at the edges and use some black stainless touch-up pain from Krylon. I wish I had something better to tell, but you know misery loves company.

same here. these companies should be held responsible for the film coating they are putting on appliances and calling it black stainless steel. my stove also looks like a piece of sh_t now because the film is peeling away every time i wipe it clean. i do not use harsh chemicals when cleaning my appliances, i use the same technique on all my appliances, my none black stainless steel appliances do not have this problem. i cook on my stove every day, in some cases the grease, egg, food, etc. takes more than just wiping it clean with a damp cloth, i can't believe something like this even passed inspection. calling it black stainless steel is false leading to the consumers.

I’m having same problem with my whirlpool refrigerator. I been researching and what whirpool is doing is spray coating, a film on there products to darken some of them, to keep finger prints to a minimum, etc. A lot of people are having this problem. I purchased mine at Home Depot. Whirlpool owns a lot of different brands and this is happening all over. Mine is the refrigerator I purchased and it started peeling at the bottom of my freezer section. The part that is peeling is now the same color as the handles which they left lighter. I’m still paying for mine.

The same thing is happening to my three LG Black Stainless Steel Refrigerator, Double Oven and Dishwasher. 
The Oven is only 3 months old and the refrigerator and dishwasher is 1.5 years.
I called my Best Buy/Geek squad and they will not cover it since it is cosmetic.

The answer you received is the common answer given by anyone that realizes they screwed up and won't admit it. I have the same problem with teenagers and some of them are in prison. This is the same type of behavior.

There is a class action lawsuit (now two) contending that "Black stainless steel" is NOT "stainless-steel-covered-in-a-plastic coating that we know fully well falls off eventually." The product is misrepresented the same way that FTC has shut shown other companies with huge fines for utterly misrepresenting their product claims.

This is really a problem for me and others that rebuilt their kitchens with Samsung garbage. I would advise keeping an eye out (search Samsung Class Action + peeling).

I too purchased a whole suite of LG black stainless steel appliances, and have regretted my decision more than any other large purchase I have ever made.  Within one year, the Refrigerator started peeling.  Soon after, the double oven range and microwave began peeling.  I just noticed this past week that the dishwasher has now started peeling at the bottom.  ALL 4 appliances look horrendous in my remodeled kitchen!  My compressor also went out on the refrigerator  after a couple of years, which Samsung did fix, but they will not do anything for the peeling.  Last year the ice maker on the fridge stopped working.  I called LG and it is out of warranty, but we had a service repair company come out, and it's going to cost us around $400 to fix, which we just cannot afford right now.  After spending THOUSANDS on new appliances, I would expect these companies to stand by their products, but they just do not care.  I will NEVER buy another LG product in my lifetime!

Absolutely a defect. I have Kenmore Elite refrigerator and dishwasher, and Samsung stove and microwave all started peeling within 6 months to a year. I never used anything except plain water to clean them. The film peels regardless of who makes it. In fact I believe most appliances are made by just a few manufacturers I believe. As bad as it is and as quickly as it happens, they had to have known it was going to happen. I hope one of us figures out how and starts a class action suit. There is no way to fix it.

Our black Samsung SS oven is also peeling near the oven door handles and this beautiful surface seems to have no secure bonding to the SS base. Like so many others have stated, this issue is a defect and by the way, imagine buying a new car and having the paint blister off shortly thereafter followed by the Dealer/Manufacturer telling you it is only cosmetic and not covered under warranty. as some others have mentioned, it is not just Black SS that has the peeling issue, I have bought 4 KitchenAid stainless steel appliances from Pacific Sales about 4 years ago but have used my gas oven less than 5 times, the stainless steel is peeling off from top of the oven door and interestingly enough their support line says they have never heard of this issue. I am regretting to have bought Kitchen Aid all together, paid over $3000 for the refrigerator that has been nothing but trouble from day one

Mine is too! Also the knobs are apparently stickers and they are bubbling bad. Then when I clean the board all the buttons get messed up as if it’s not sealed! So the clock doesn’t fully work or buttons randomly go off and the oven does ‘haunting’ things without human touch. What is the resolution for this!?

We got the stove, fridge, dishwasher and microwave with our SBA loan from Fema. All Samsung Black stainless steel. You can bearly touch them without them scratching. I too have the peeling problem on my LG refrigerator. My appliances are just over the one year mark. The refrigerator also has a terrible moaning sound when the fan runs. Each time that happens (daily) the noise lasts 1 hr. and 10 minutes. I will never buy another LG appliance.
Since everything in my kitchen matches, I will need to replace everything. What a waste of good money and nobody is willing to help.
