The phone is unlocked out of the box, you just need to put your existing nano sim card into the slot or buy a sim card kit from whichever carrier you want and that will become your new contract. (pay by month etc types) Initially I ran the device for a few days to make sure there was no issue with the unit, any screen abnormalities etc, then I put my sim card in. Only need to shut if off to put the sim card in, and should pick up right away or on a second reboot/restart.

Note: You can also use the unlocked phone via strong wifi only. This is a benefit as you may be in an area that does not have a good connection and your speed has been downgraded.
