• Yes they can be used independently and when one is taken out the music while stop and will continue on the other.

• Yes, but they both have to be within bluetooth range. Apparently one of them receives the signal from the phone and transmits to the other - I walked away from one of them, I think the right one, with the other one in my ear, and the phone in hand, and the left one stopped receiving once out of range of the right one.
