This phone requires activation with Sprint.

A device that is not turned on by a service provider.

A device that in not actively receiving cell or data services

An unactivated device is a device that hasn't been connected to a service provider(sprint, at&t,Verizon,Tmobile).

Not active or not working with a carrier

An activated device has cell services through a cell phone provider (i.e. AT&T, Verizon, etc.), whereas an inactivated device does not have cell service (other services such as wifi might still be available).

A device that has yet to be activated by your plan

an inactivated device is just that - inactivated for any service carrier. if you were to just buy the phone outright without signing up or renewing your current contract with a cel phone service provider
