“can i just use my existing sim card in this new phone not knowing much about phones......i just want to be able to take my sim card out and put it straight into a new phone.....then charge up and go using my existing phone plan......is this possible”

Since you don't know much about phones and you live in Australia, before you buy make sure you know what technology your carrier uses GSM or CDMA. The phones that work for one won't work on the other unless you have a dual use phone. AT&T uses GSM here and that determines the Sim card. I believe that dual use phones use two sim cards, and that GSM can be unlocked and move between carriers. (Again here.) But please check it out with your carrier. Also, Sim cards come in different sizes. However, make sure you saved to your Sim card and not just the phone memory and backup to a PC or the cloud. The people that sell you the phone, or the carrier should be able to transfer just about all your information, contacts, etc. Ask them about your pictures. Many of your apps may not be up to the operating system and have to be reloaded. And some won't come over. Good Luck.
