• Yes. The edge apps and edge people will be available at all times. The preview of whatever you are trying to look at extends up to the edge.

• Not really. When the screen is locked, you can access missed notifications from the people you put on there, news, weather or other things you set up. However, when using the phone (it's unlocked), you can swipe it to access those contacts you assigned to either call, text or email.
