Chances are if you have the Samsung for life plan when you send the phone back after your upgrade they may not accept it or may charge you a fee to fix it. Other than if you just want to upgrade to a new phone you are always allowed to do that, it just depends on any upgrade fees and how much you may have to pay out of pocket. The short answer is you can upgrade anytime you want.
