I'm a Verizon customer and I set up my unlocked phone this evening. I went from a Verizon locked Galaxy S6 edge to this phone. The only thing that I even noticed during the transfer process was that the Verizon voicemail app was specific to their phones. I wasn't aware of that, but since I don't get many voicemails, it didn't matter to me. I found a third party app in about 20 minutes and recorded a standard greeting and everything is rosy. The other Verizon apps (Tunes, Naviagtor, Cloud....etc...) I never even opened on the old phone. Everything else carried over seamlessly, even my text messages, which I was ELATED to see. Smart Switch is your friend. So - I suppose the answer to your question really depends upon how much YOU use Verizon's specific apps. If you're like me, and never even launched them, then an unlocked phone is fine. But if you rely on any of them (particularly the voicemail and perhaps the cloud), then you may want to stick with the locked phone. Weigh those pros and cons.

I noted people complaining about this on the unlocked Galaxy S8 and Verizon, they couldn't access visual voice mail and had to dial the old school way *86 or use some other workaround. For further research, some carriers provide some carrier specific apps to install, in Google Play Store (Google app store for Android) or download from carrier. Usually under the carriers name or official account (beware 3rd party companies that use carriers babe in titles, verify/confirm by diligent research if ok to use). You may also research test, review, & support forums/sites; for testing of device full model & matching conditions; sometimes they will have Android settings or software/app solutions to enable missing services. Beware of 3rd party apps, research diligently to confirm if ok or not. There are some 3rd party ports of carrier software/apps to provide/enable sort of some carrier services, quality & trustworthiness & safety varies (some sites like xda-developers more trustworthy).

Samsung even gives you an option to send the corresponding sim card for many of the popular carriers. While this is just speculation, as I did not get my handset yey, but I am with sprint, bought the unlocked version for 75 bucks less than the sprint one. As i checked out it asked what service I was with, selected sprint and a sim card is coming as well. So even though its unlocked, i should still be able to avoid the store and activate it from home. The only "Drawback" is that it wil not have any carrier software preloaded.... which i think is better.
