yes, you can download 1 gigabyte of music on the watch and listen to it without the phone being near. I use mine to go running. I've got 250 songs on my phone and created a playlist of 45 songs that I downloaded to my watch that i listen to while running- i leave the phone behind.

Yes, you must transfer the music that is stored locally (not on Spotify, Pandora, etc...) through the Galaxy Wear application that gets installed upon connecting this device to your smartphone.
