No you do not have to have service for it. I bought the LTE model just to have the option for service in the future. However it works well as a GPS model for now.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have the LTE model but onlybuse the bluetooth function ... havent purchased a data plan for my watch. So yes its possible. I got the LTE model for "when" id like to get a data plan for the watch. As of now dont have a use for a watch data plan.
