• By "that phone" do you mean a Samsung galaxy phone? No you don't. It should work with any new Android phone. I have the galaxy S7 and the only fitness feature I could not get to work without having my phone connected was mapping my run. Of course you need your phone connected for text and call notifications. I store my running playlists on the watch and connect a Bluetooth headset to it, works very well. Heart rate may not be as accurate as a chest strap but its quite accurate for a wrist sensor. Step counter seems to be as accurate as most other fitness trackers.

• No, but it works better coupled with a smartphone. Mainly Android. Not for Iphone yet!
