You can use them together or separately. If you open the Samsung Gear app I think you can designate which earphone you want to be your primary one.

there is a mic on both. for calls, you can only use one at a time. it lets you choose left or right. for music, you can use them both, or just one.

When I entire one at a time, the first one I put in starts to play music. The second one is still in the case. I'm not sure if there is a certain distance when that would not work but one at a time does work. There is a mic in both ear pieces.

You could use both together or one at a time, and yes, they both have a mic. You go into a setup menu and choose which earpiece will be they primary, and that is the one you will be using as a single. You can always go and change which one you want to use.
