The HR monitor automatically takes your heart rate every hour or you can easily access the widget and take your rate as often as you like. It's quick and accurate... Only takes 10 seconds or so and tracks all your readings. It's an amazing "watch"!

The pre-set workouts on the watch are actually just a way to guess calories burned per minute. Anytime you start a workout, whether it's Archery, Running, or Skiing, it just starts a stopwatch to track your time and at the end uses the exercise type to estimate calories burned. I think there may also be some smarts for certain types of exercises where it can determine the exercise based on your motions, for instance when I play frisbee with the dog it automatically starts a "Dynamic workout" without me having to start it.
