As long as the laptop has an SATA III port, you can install it in the laptop. You can also use it as external storage if you purchase an enclosure.

You will, however, need to either use a SATA-to-USB interface adapter or another desktop PC in order to be able to clone the contents of your old drive to the new SSD. Alternatively, you could install the blank/empty SSD in your laptop and install Windows using a flash drive built with the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool which is free from Microsoft. Sometimes a fresh start is the best way.
