So long as you have an available m.2 ssd slot or an expansion card that you can mount the drive to you can use this in a pc. Many modern motherboards these days have at least 1 m.2 ssd slot available. As for determining what it was used for, well, you can't really do that, however you can download a free program online called crystaldiskinfo and in it you can find out the "health" of your drive. The more "health" that it has the more time it has left in it for future r/w operations. I highly recommend getting this program regardless as it is an invaluable tool for ensuring the health of your hard disks.

You will be better off buying a less expensive PCIe 3.0 version if your motherboard does not have 4.0. After installation download the proprietary Samsung Magician software. This will allow you to view diagnostics that will show the drive health, including how much data was written to it. For reference, I just purchased one of these and it only had 1.7 TB written to it, which is basically nothing.
