It'll still work and give you surround sound, however you need a Dolby Atmos compatible device for the true Atmos experience. That's why I connect my Xbox straight to the soundbar. It's Samsung to Samsung, so compatibility isn't an issue. If you don't have a Dolby Atmos device, you just won't get that full experience. The surround sound option still sounds incredible.

I believe it will even work with optical port if you don’t have HDMI ARC, but can’t confirm that since I’m using HDMI. This thing really shines on Atmos movies so make sure you connect Blu Ray or UHD Blu Ray player. Netflix can do some Atmos if you connect an Xbox One but it’s not as good as an Atmos disc.
