I am not sure about a 4k display, but I use the Apple HDMI to USB-C adapter to connect my Notebook 9 Pro to my Dell 34 inch ultrawide monitor running at 3440x1440 resolution. The single USB-C connection supports the display, USB hub, and power delivery to keep the laptop charged at the same time.
