If the esn were to be bad, best buy nor any company would be able to sell them or even accept them as trades or something. Refurbished just means someone may have changed their mind about the color or the memory size and exchanged, possibly just returned. But in doing so, the service from the previous person would already have either been moved to the new device or canceled from the phone already
