If they steal the SD card, then you will lose all of the video. However, all is not lost. The camera does upload a still photo to your Picasa account approximately once every 10 seconds while it is detecting motion or audio events, so there is a chance you will get some pictures of the thief. Not as helpful as having the full video, but it's better than nothing.

You can configure the camera to upload pictures to Picasa with your google account however. This is a downside of having local storage, but the huge upside is no monthly/yearly cloud storage fees.
