Yes, I hear background noise, the mic on the cam works well and you can plug in external PC speakers, but it is not high quality, it does work pretty well though. The faster your connection the better the quality of audio/video. It looks good on my iPad, and my Galaxy S5 and best on my wired PC.

When speaking through the camera to those in the the room you must speak clear a slowly. But works well. I have communicated with my son and dog often very well. The volume is great. No need to be near camera. I have one on 2nd level of my home and you can hear me talking through the camera on the 1st level. There is a short delay. Good thing is you can hear yourself talking because of the delay. So many great functions!

Mine is set mid level for both hearing and speaking and in a room 16'x 14' there is no problem with hearing clearly across the room. Also the same with speaking to the person, set mid level they hear you clearly.

When I check my camera (inside my family room) on my iPhone from around the country and the world, I can hear conversations, the TV in the room, cars passing by outside (if the windows are open), very clearly. These sounds are coming from as much as 20 feet away.
