Any type can work for that application. SSD external drives are nice because they don't have spinning media, so no head crashes or other failures that traditional hard drives have had over the years. That being said, I've used WD Passport drives for years and been happy with them. Now that the price of SSD drives are coming down, any future external backup drives II buy will probably be SSD. SSD drives are also blazing fast compared to almost all external hard drives, especially when connected via USB 3.0 or higher.
