“Would this work as the same as an internal one? been looking at replacing the C drive with SSD but if this will do the same then I would be ok with having and external SSD.”

No. The cost of this drive compared to an internal SSD wether 2.5 or a M.2 is drastic and the performance would be degraded. This drive is meant for backups and transportation not as a OS drive.
