The wireless charging pad uses magnetic inductance to send power across the small gap between the charger and phone using high frequency magnetic fields. It works like a transformer where the primary and secondary windings are separated by the air gap between the charger and phone's back cover. Note that this will only work with phones designed to work with the QI standard wireless charging technology - I.E. your phone must have the receiving coil built-in or added under the back cover.
