Hi Hewpmedecide, the rears do need to be plugged in. When you connect your rears to the sound bar your system becomes a 4.1 system and you will get true, or simulated, surround sound depending on how the audio was encoded. Thanks, ^Scott

What is wireless is the hub to the soundbar. the unit includes a Powercord that connects to the hub,2 sets of wires one for the left speaker another for the right which directly connects to the hub. I'm not familiar with the 2.1 setups. I have a 5.1 Samsung soundbar that is connected through HDMI ( it can be connected by blu tooth, but didn't want to connect that way because of a loss in audio) and rear speakers.
