“Will original file name of photo be carried over when transferred or does software rename the file. If it renames it - what is the purpose of doing so since it makes reference to original photo impossible? How does it avoid duplicates if renamed?”

There is software that you use with this by Sandisk that keeps track of photos you have removed. I do not store my pictures or files long term on this because I need to love large files quite often. So once you remove a file you will need to keep track of you rename it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes it renames them. It also changes the date to the date backed up so you lose the historical context. It only avoids duplicates if you let it delete the original. It may as well be a hard copy photo. I use it strictly as a last resort backup. But it does save copies really fast.
