• There is a way to point your your documenst, pictures , videos to any drive, windows will move the files there and future files will be saved there. While this can be done I do not reccomend it with removable USB flash drives ves permanently. You can temporarily move the file for update then maybe move them back. If you are low on space consider a hard-disk upgrade. ?? A good time to consider an SSD it will speed up most modern computers as well as extend operating time on battery.

• No. Move personal files from laptop to the drive then do the updates. Or get a new larger hard drive for your laptop and clone you old drive to it.

• You can certainly store your files on this device to free-up space to run the MS updates, but certainly not the only option because these devices are very small and can easily be misplaced unless you are a very well organized person and won't forget where you put this usb drive.
