If you use an adapter, make sure it is a genuine apple made adapter. That is the best way to ensure compatibility. That route would work, the sandisk app is the key here, the app should Recognize the device and allow it to function correctly but the 30 pin on the older devices have the power wires switched in the later models so make sure you have the most up to date Apple adapter. If you do experience power issues look to buy an older adapter that will maintain the power wiring pin out of the oldest devices.
