“Installed Samsung EVO 860 500G in old Dell Studio 540, cloned hd fine, but could not set ssd as boot disk as bios has no AHCI option. Does this SanDisk also require AHCI in order to operate as boot disk? Tried updating bios from Dell, still no AHCI.”

• It can use AHCI or ATA. In your case, just select ATA on the bios. I would also enable Legacy mode if you have one. Set secure boot to "disable".

• AHCI must be selected in bios before installing windows, If not you can try to turn it on in windows o/s. Google turn on AHCI in Windows 10
