There is software on the drive for the MAC. I do not know if it is specific for the MacBook though.

As far as performance, my understanding is that the bigger the SSD, the faster it will perform. A 1T SSD has twice as many memory chips as a 512G SSD so it can move data around quicker. I have upgraded machines from 128G SSD to 1T SSD and seen significant performance improvements.
