“Does the base have to be fastened to the stand it sits on? Or is it stable enough without being fastened down to keep a 55- or 60-inch TV from tipping? I ask because some stands have glass tops, which would make it difficult to fasten the base.”

The stand has a large heavy base (27 in. Wide x 15 in. Deep) that does not need to fasten to the surface it sits on, or have a provision to do so. I have a very heavy 31 in. industrial Monitor mounted on it which has speakers attached on each side that it handles with no problem. It should work fine for your application as long as the glass is strong enough to support it. I am quite pleased with the quality of the stand, and it's fit and finish should complement any environment it is placed in. Please see the attached photo, and for scale my TV with speakers is 39 inches wide.
