“We just ordered the Sanus-TV Wall Mount for our 50" Vizio. We'll be hanging it above fireplace, but the 16" studs are not centered behind fireplace. How far can the TV shift laterally once mounted (hoping to place mounting plate on studs, then shift TV)?”

Good Day, This TV can only be shifted laterally when pulled out from the wall, which isn't ideal in your situation. Your best bet is to go with a BLF228. Thanks, Jake @ SANUS
